Samsung 837 and Zaha Hadid’s 520 West 28th Street will be featured in this year’s Archtober. Archtober (ärk’tōbər) is New York City’s Architecture and Design Month, the fifth annual month-long festival of architecture activities, programs and exhibitions taking place during the month of October. Through special tours, lectures and exhibitions, Archtober raises awareness of the important role of design in our city and to build a lasting civic and international recognition of the richness of New York’s built environment.
Located in the heart of the Meatpacking district in NYC, Samsung 837 combines art, fashion, technology, and sport in unprecedented ways. It’s not a store, but a new kind of place filled with ideas, experiences, and Samsung’s cutting edge devices. GMS served as structural design engineer. The building is a torquing tower that rises out of an existing 2-story Art Moderne style brick warehouse, built in 1938, which was once part of the Gansevoort Market. With 12’+ ceiling heights throughout, the building consists of 28,000 SF of retail space, 27,000 SF of office space, and 7,000+ SF of roof-deck & terraces.
