On Thursday Laura’s team continued its route around the southern neighborhoods. They continuously saw buildings with nonstructural masonry infill walls that seemed to have acted as lateral resisting elements, evident by the in-plane damage.

This Tlalpan community was composed of more than five residential buildings. One of the buildings collapsed. Our engineers walked through one of the remaining buildings. Severe damage was observed in the unreinforced masonry infill walls.

Ramon and Jennifer’s team gained access to buildings noted during Wednesday’s street observations by contacting the respective structural engineers of those buildings. This day’s assessment also included newer buildings which didn’t suffer significant damage.
