Jessica Mandrick presents to ASCE about Vertical Additions on Existing Buildings

Print Friendly

Jessica Mandrick presents a case study of the New York City Rescue Mission along with several other buildings. The Rescue Mission is an existing three story homeless shelter that is currently undergoing a three story vertical addition, while remaining in operation throughout the construction. Challenges examined include: incorporating a lateral system into an existing building, methods of reinforcing existing columns, irregular existing connections, foundation bearing capacity, accessibility, and maintaining building operation/use during construction. Strategies to be presented include reducing live load capacities on existing floors, coupon testing of existing steel, reducing loads through wind tunnel studies, geotechnical investigations, and bypassing irregular connections.
