“Ask the Magic 8 Ball” Wins at this Year’s Canstruction

Print Friendly

GMS unveiled the Magic 8 Ball at Brookfield Place for the 23rd annual Canstruction competition. The sculpture has received this year’s honorable mention award.

Canstruction is an international charity competition where 29 teams of architects, engineers, contractors and the students they mentor, competed this year to design and build giant structures made entirely from cans of food. At the close of the competition all of the food from the New York City competition will be donated to City Harvest.

New York City is joined by over 100 cities across North America and other countries such as Australia and New Zealand who will hold Canstruction Competitions in the coming year. Highlighting the creativity and compassion of top architectural, engineering and construction firms, these astounding structures are helping to change the world – by lifting the spirits of those in need, by raising public awareness, and most importantly, by collecting millions of pounds of food for local food banks.

The Magic 8 Ball provides an answer to hunger in New York City. At 8′-0″ tall / 6′-6″ wide, the sculpture takes nourishment in hand and offers 64 levels of tuna fish to those in need. A self-fulfilling prophecy, perhaps? “It is decidedly so!” This structure’s 7,056 cans will feed 1,838 New Yorkers!

CAN we feed those in need?
“You may rely on it”

CAN we end hunger?
“Signs point to yes”

CAN we build beautiful sculptures using CANS?
“As I see it, yes!”

“Ask the Magic 8 Ball” will be on display at 200 Vesey Street (Brookfield Place) until November 16, 2015.
